Despite having played saxophone for the past umpteen years (approximately), I’ve generally laid pretty low in terms of playing out. Wherever I’ve lived, my neighbors have been treated to plenty of free “concerts” – whether they want to hear my playing or not. Lately I’ve been getting out more, playing with different combinations of people, and plan to continue doing so.
I have been teaching private lessons over the last several years at 8th Note Music Studios in Marysville, Washington for several years. It’s a highly rewarding endeavor, working with players of a variety of skill levels on fundamentals and jazz improvisation. I studied the former with a very effective teacher named Ray Martyn. For the latter, my guide was the great Don Lanphere. Both of these men have since passed on, but they both left an indelible impression on me.
